Teenage Lifeguard (Delmarya)

Delmarya Fier as a lifeguard

When you’re down, feeling low
Just remember your name.

The second child of the fourth generation of Fiers became a teenager and she’s struggling. Because she was born in Sulani, her parents named her Delmarya, meaning “noble protector, from the sea.” Deli wants to live up to her name and become a conservationist like her father. She only works part-time as a lifeguard now since she’s a teen in high school. But things aren’t going well. Changes brought by adolescence have been making her life hard.

Deli’s allergic to the sun—it’s severe. A little exposure makes her flesh burn and a few hours will kill her, so she wears sunglasses and guards the beach during the evening.

As a kid, Deli was always outside.

Now that she’s older and her body’s changed, she can’t… even though she loves the outdoors. She misses out on what her siblings can do. She’s not resentful (at least not yet); she doesn’t know what to make of who or what she is. Deli was just born like this.

Her father, Asher, cares for her and is trying to help. He’s known about Deli’s potential to develop this “allergy” since she was a toddler and he’s always looked out for her.

None of his other teens in the house are like this, so Asher’s trying to develop a special bond with Deli. He doesn’t want her to feel lonely.

They decided to watch a movie together. Deli picked the movie.

Asher had to stretch while watching it because it wasn’t his type of film. He needed to get up and move to focus.

Even though he tried to concentrate and enjoy one-on-one time with his daughter, the movie was just too boring and awful. Asher could point out every plot hole, the acting was horrific, the movie wasn’t entertaining in any way. He couldn’t even hate watch it, so he passed out due to boredom during a scene Deli found hilarious.

Yikes.

Anyway, he got up, acted like nothing happened, and mentored her in becoming stronger so the sun would affect her less. Deli tried her best, but she’s a little insecure around her dad.

Even though he doesn’t look it, he’s really old. Deli worries that she’s just another of the sixteen kids he’s had and not that important to him. He already has a daughter he loves. He raves about his eldest constantly and stares at her picture every day. She moved out before Deli was even born.

Asher’s trying with Deli. Maybe? But she doesn’t know how good their relationship can be if he can’t even stay awake to watch something with her. As for him, he’s worried Deli is going to kill herself because she loves the beach, the sun, and everything else about Sulani. Or worse—he’s worried that she won’t like herself and will want to fundamentally stop being like him.

They say don’t even try to resist
Look at what you’ve been given
Be grateful and don’t take the piss …

When you’re down, feeling low
Just remember your name
They ain’t us
They ain’t us, baby
‘Cause you know what they don’t
Just remember your name

(They flicker, flicker, flicker)
But they ain’t gonna shine like us

Flicker – Rina Sawayama

    Hello!

Stopping through to let you know I am one of your lurkers. 😉

    Regarding this chapter:
I laughed a lot re-reading it again. Poor dad can’t stay awake for a show his daughter likes but he doesn’t. At least he tried.

Thanks so much for leaving a comment. It’s appreciated!
Asher’s an odd one and always struggling to get along with someone for some reason – it’s funny how Sims can have such vastly different movie preferences autonomously.

Congratulations. I can see that you have succeeded in getting on the reader.
I will dive a little more into your story when I get a little more time. Your welcome page / Introduction page looks nice and clear.

Hi! I’ve been lurking around your blog for a while now but never quite knew where to begin. Your pictures are gorgeous! Is the fourth generation the one where you started documenting the story, or am I still missing things and did I start in the middle by accident? Oh well, I’ll figure it out as I go.

Raving about your eldest kid but not anyone else and staring at her picture specifically every day? Oof. That’s got to be hard on the other kids, to see their dad have such an obvious favourite 😅

Thank you very much! Yes, you’re right—this is the beginning. The first generation in so many legacies tends to read the same, so I skipped starting with all of that here. I also started with the fourth generation to give myself slightly more editorial control over the past and hopefully room to create more of a story even though beginning like this is slightly awkward. I agree that their father’s favoritism is hard to stomach even though there are reasons for it. He’s not good with people and unfortunately his children are included in that.

Also, I was very pleasantly surprised by your comment. I only read the first few chapters of the first arc of Tales of Camelot and it was maybe a month or so ago, but the couple chapters I read left me with two fairly strong impressions: 1) narrative-led SimLit is well-written (note to self: do better) and 2) come back and read this when you have time and can properly pay attention. I am particularly curious about the friendship between the upper class and outsiders in Tales of Camelot and how certain parents might react once they find out (but I’m really only at the beginning so I’m sure there’s a lot more to be curious/excited about).

I see! I’ll keep reading as-is, then 🙂 At first I thought Delmarya was the main character as the story starts out with heavily focusing on her, but the siblings all seem to be getting an equal amount of spotlight. It’s too early in the story for me to call favourites but I did immediately empathise with Deli, haha.

Oooh, thank you! I didn’t know you had read bits of it – I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it! 😊 I love chatting to readers (especially if they’re writers themselves), so feel free to pop over and say hi when the mood strikes you 😄
Notes to self to improve are always great, as long as they come from a positive mindset and not a negative one. I’ve read a few chapters further in yours and your pictures are once again making me want to give depth-of-field blurs a try (Asher and Adelise’s picture in the introduction is gorgeous!) and I’m right at a chapter that gave me a lot of thoughts, so I look forward to seeing what the rest of the story brings. 🙂

Thanks again. I recently began using ReShade and I’m so glad I did. I wish I’d tried it earlier. Screenshots using it don’t show up in the actual chapters and won’t for quite a while, (and the change may not even be noticeable because I won’t use the same lighting or presets that I did for the introduction shots), but I really like how much control it gives over depth-of-field in the game and how nice the screenshots look.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting! He has 1 wife for whom he should be grateful. His game isn’t strong enough to have multiple, but she’s not had 16 kids, so maybe there’s something to be said about that… but 16 isn’t necessarily that many in context. Maybe.

    Hi Haneul!

I really enjoyed your intro (I didn’t see a place to leave a comment, so I thought I’d leave one here. I’m new to WP, so please forgive my ignorance and there is a comment section there 😅). Asher has quite lofty goals (100 children – yikes – the diapers alone frighten me). I can see why he had to move from his tiny home and build an elaborate palace (which is probably a very small space to house 100 fledglings). If I were a Sim, I would gladly offer Asher assistance with his goal. He is a rather attractive vampire 😅 okay, moving on…

I really enjoyed your story! The photo of Asher face-planted into the floor was hilarious.

I find it endearing that Asher tries so hard to spend time with his daughter, especially since he feels her allergy might make her feel less. I was a bit shocked that, although he was concerned that she might accidentally kill herself from the sunlight, that he was more concerned that she would choose to renounce vampirism. Like, dang, is Asher that cold that he’d rather his daughter die than be human (or perhaps another Supe)? 😬😬

Looking forward to reading more of your storytelling 🥰

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comment! Regarding Asher, it seems like you may have been catfished by the introduction.😅 I apologize for that. He’s not as sophisticated as he may initially appear but he’s not pure evil and clumsiness either.
